A simple bedtime routine for kids: brush, book, bed

A simple bedtime routine is brush, book, bed, in the same order every night. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends it: help your child brush their teeth, read a favourite book together, then put them to bed at a regular time. A predictable routine helps a child learn what comes next and can ease bedtime stress.

1. Brush. Young children need an adult's help to brush well. They can have a go, then you take your turn. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for ages 3 to 6, and a smear the size of a grain of rice under 3. Have them spit out the extra without rinsing with water.

2. Book. After brushing, sit somewhere comfortable and read together, even for 15 minutes, with the TV off. Let your child choose the book, even the same favourite again. Ask what they see in the pictures. You can also make up your own stories, use silly voices or sing.

3. Bed. Go to bed at the same time each night. If bedtime runs late, even 15 to 20 minutes earlier can make a big difference. Don't wait for yawns or eye rubbing, because by then it's probably too late. Putting your child to bed awake helps them learn to fall asleep alone, which can help prevent night wakings later.

Keep the order the same every night, so your child knows what is coming.
